Teething Pops. For the Babes.

It has been a challenging week because my little guy is teething like crazy. He typically doesn't seem to react to his teeth coming in which I believe is from the Baltic Amber necklace he's worn since he was three months old. For whatever reason, the only thing that is helping him now are the teething pops that I have been making for him. The pops are made from one of my herbal teas Mama's "Calm" Tea Blend..... with a small amount of honey used to sweeten, soothe sore gums, and enhance the flavors of the herbs. The popsicle mold that I like is perfect for little mouths and is available here.

Cedar will ask for a pop when he is visibly struggling with the teething and suck on it until the pain subsides.They are actually one of the few things that are helping him to fall asleep during these growing pains. I've actually been enjoying them too.... Bonus to all you Mama's out there, the herbs in these pops are also good for calming nervous tension which is always good for a Mama with a teething babe. An additional plus is that if you are a nursing mama, your babe will get this through your milk so drink up your tea! ;)

Recipe:

Teething Pops

Ingredients:

5 tsp. Mama's Calm Tea Blend

1 quart of hot water

Splash of honey, maple syrup, or Rose Petal Elixir

Directions:

1. Put the tea blend in a tea strainer and into a 1 quart mason jar. 

2. Add hot water and cover for 15 minutes.

3. Strain and add a small amount of sweetener.

4. Let cool to room temperature.

5. Pour tea into mini popsicle molds and put in freezer. 

6. Left over tea will last a few days in the fridge so you can refill pops as needed or just drink as an herbal iced tea.

Wild Spring Edibles. A Starter Guide.

This week I have really felt the spring arrive! I knew immediately when I stepped outside and took a breath in. With that inhale I could taste the earth coming back to life. The sound of the birds singing melodies to one another and the scent of green that is springing up all around. It has been a feast for the senses that every year always brings me the same giddiness. I love it so much and try my best to savor every minute of it.

Spring is such a wonderful time, especially for herbalists because it means it's time to forage for wild medicinals! It is an empowering feeling to go outside and collect your own medicine and food. what's even better is that it's very easy as long as you know some important things.

Mama's Medicinal Hummus

Hummus is one of those foods that is always nice have around for snacking. Some fresh cut veggies with this protein packed dip is a wonderful way to fill an afternoon hunger spell without reaching for junk. I modified and improved this hummus recipe. It now has more of a fusion flare going on. The focus in the past was turmeric and garlic and I've now expanded it to more herbs and even better flavor. I hope you agree! My kids do....especially my 15 month old who eats it straight with a spoon!

Rose Petal Elixir

Rose is such a wonderful medicine. After hours of infusing this lovely rose petal elixir, it was ready to strain and bottle. I thought it would be a helpful remedy today, as I'm feeling a little emotional due to the recent loss of my Grandmother. I can't help but feel a little sad that I didn't know her better. So today rose is here to give me a hug. Lovely, lovely rose. 

Rose is such a loving friend to our hearts, there to nurture and comfort the broken heart, grief, sadness, and PTSD. I always keep this elixir in my fridge. I had large amounts on hand when my oldest son was little. When he or one of his friends that he had over would get a boo boo or someone had hurt feelings, I would drop some elixir in their mouth and they would feel better almost instantly. It was the sweetest thing because the kids would come running into the kitchen telling me they needed some of my magic potion. Awwww....the memories of those boys so young, so many moons ago! I've started to keep more on hand again now that my fifteen month old is getting bumps and bruises while he cruises around, and added to a special formula, seems to calm his temper tantrums that have become a more common event lately in our house. :) You may wonder how rose can help with a child's boo boo..... consider the injury a minor form of trauma for them. Those injuries sometimes are upsetting events in the moment and rose is there to help soften that.

Roses are safe and a little goes a long way because of its floral properties. The only thing to be aware of is if you have a rose allergy.  In this case don't try to use the elixir for obvious reasons. The maximum dose of Rose elixir is up to 3 ml per serving. For dosing with children use Young's formula.

You can add your elixir to lemonade, tea, desserts, plain, or in water. Get creative! I  decided to dress up a bowl of vanilla bean ice cream with my Rose syrup since ice cream helps with sadness sometimes too :). I also added some wild cherry balsamic vinegar, and a few sprinkles of some cardamom, black peppercorn, and rose petals. It was a wonderful way to end my day.

Recipe:

Rose Petal Elixir

Ingredients:

1 cup of sugar  

2 cups of water

3-5 roses {Rosa} (stems removed)

 

Directions:

1. Make a simple syrup by heating the water and sugar on medium to medium-high until the sugar dissolves.

2. Remove from heat

3. Add rose petals

4. Cover and let sit for 4-6 hours (depending on how strong you want it)

5. Strain and bottle

6. Keep in fridge and it should last a few months

*Alternatively you can substitute the simple syrup with honey or maple syrup. I use the simple syrup because one of my teachers taught me that way and she believes it has a better shelf life when prepared like this.
